Material Information

As we are specialists in silver jewellery, all our silver items are hallmarked and are no less than Sterling standard (at least 92.5% silver content). Any silver article that weighs 7.78 grammes and over must be hallmarked. Bertie Browns sterling silver jewellery is handcrafted to a very high standard of which we are very proud. We are therefore keen to pass on all relevant information to our customers in order that you can care for and maintain the finish and overall effect of your chosen piece. This should ensure that you enjoy wearing your jewellery for many years to come.

Polished Sterling Silver Jewellery

Due to the nature and softness of the metal, sterling silver pieces that have a highly polished finish are prone to fine scratches as a result of normal wear. This can be kept to a minimum with careful wear and regular polishing with cream silver cleaner. It is possible to remove more stubborn scratches with a professional polish, which can be done by a reputable silversmith.

Sterling silver is nickel free and is suitable for people who are sensitive to metals. Care must be taken not to expose the silver to perfumes, toiletries, household cleaning fluids and perspiration – these may cause the silver to tarnish. If tarnishing does occur, the items should be polished with a silver cloth.

Matt Sterling Silver Jewellery

Sterling silver jewellery with a matt finish must not be polished in the normal way. A slightly abrasive surface such as a scourer should be used to revitalise the effect. Gently brush the silver in one direction with the scourer to achieve the best results.

Semi-precious Stone Jewellery

Some of our jewellery contains semi-precious stones such as turquoise, amtheyst, garnet and onyx. Care must be taken not to bring these into contact with perfumes, hairsprays, toiletries or any harsh cleaning fluids. Use a soft cloth or a very soft brush to clean any stones.

Cubic Zirconia Jewellery

A cubic zirconia is a man-made gemstone which has the appearance of a diamond. They can be coloured/dyed to resemble other gemstones. Cubic zirconias are durable but they do not have the life expectancy of a diamond. If the gemstones need cleaning they should be cleaned gently with mild soapy detergent and a soft brush.

Pandora Cleaning

For cleaning, simply use lukewarm soapy water – this will work the best. Use a soft tooth brush to scrub the jewellery and then rinse it in clean water. To remove caked-on dirt, let it soak for 10 minutes in lukewarm soapy water, gently brush it clean and then rinse it in clean water.

If you are in doubt about the state of your jewellery, you can always contact your local goldsmith and ask him or her to repair any damage.

Important: Chemical agents are a quick, but harsh way to clean your jewellery. We recommend that use of such cleaners be avoided. Especially oxidised silver and pearls are easily damaged.
